Passed by here today… Controversial little island site that looks as though straight out of “nowhere” Utah or some silver mining operation in Arizona. Nope… It’s surrounded by a lake, baseball fields, a tech center, bike paths, major traffic arteries etc. It’s east Boulder’s dirty little secret. An abandoned toxic clay and rock milling site just east of town. But damn if it isn’t photography eye-candy. Need to sneak in next time and try to grab some up-close and personal shots.

Can read about the varied history and controversy here

Photo

Architecture Postcards From Around the World

“…Postcards and Blogs share something in common. Both contain basically private information but can be read by people who have nothing to do with the writers. There is nothing wrong with reading a postcard that is not addressed to you or checking out a blog that is all about the personal life of an unknown person. A typical way of protecting privacy is using information that will be understood only by the people whom the message is addressed to. Another defensive approach is to be laconic, rather inexpressive. This last strategy is typically seen in postcards…”

ryanpanos:

Retrofitting The American Dream by Artur Nesterenko Alexandrovich

The 2007 market crash forced a relocation of suburban housing into a high-density, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood of the center city and inner suburbs. This created a profound structural shift – a reversal of what took place in the 1950s, when drivable suburbs boomed and flourished as center cities emptied and withered. The fact that the land under the house has no value and the houses are worth less than they would cost to be replaced, creates a big possibility that many fringe suburbs will turn into waste lands, with abandoned houses and a rising crime rate.

Prospecting 2

Prospecting 2

Copycat Architects in China

Copycat Architects in China:
Zaha Hadid vs the Pirates…

ryanpanos:

Few decades after the 1964 exhibition Architecture Without Architects curated by Bernard Rudofsky at New York MoMA, there is a clear interest from many architects – in which I most certainly belong – for architectures that did not necessitated the intervention of the architect as an expert. We can thus see a multitude of projects set-up around the various slums/favelas of the world. Some of them are interesting, some others are incredibly inconsiderate, but this does not explain this sort of professional “death drive” that makes architects fascinated by the production of their absence.

This fascination’s reasons are maybe to be looked for with another one, also specific to this current period of time, that makes us, architects, willing to integrate the appropriation of architecture by its users as part of its protocol of creation. Once again, I am fully including my own work within this influence – one might want to say “trend” – but it is important to interrogate our obsessions. Is the notion of appropriation a way for the architect to dismiss his own responsibility and his power? Is it a philanthropic pulse that allows us to offer generously our work to the collectivity? As always, the answer probably comprises both of this extreme propositions.

Why indeed?

Always wanted a to-scale (U.S.) ruler/wallpaper image so I...

Always wanted a to-scale (U.S.) ruler/wallpaper image so I created one this evening. Designed for iPhone 4/4S (should work on 3G models as well). Based on a classic 1950’s Koh-i-Noor Architect’s scale I own. Designed specifically for use as a lock-screen wallpaper image… Enjoy!

Tumblr defaults images to 500px. To download the correct iPhone resolution click here, right click on image and choose “save…”.
